Best SEC Games of Week 8

Welp. I was almost perfect in Week 7 Predictions, improving to 14-8. I only missed one game....and it was the game that mattered. In a eerily similar situation to the LSU game in 2013, Auburn had no chance in Starkville as they fell behind early.

Week 8 doesn't offer the slate of games we have had the past two weeks.

Georgia at Arkansas
It's amazing that UGA sits at the 10 spot sporting only 1 loss. A lot of us COMPLETELY wrote them off when Gurley was suspended. Yet, UGA stormed into Columbia and ransacked the Tigers. The backup to Gurley, Chubb, turned in an amazing performance. Even 3rd Stringer, Douglass, managed to find the endzone. In a bit of brilliance, I picked up Chubb on my fantasy team almost immediately, and then traded him for a more long term player. Defensivly, the Dogs held the typically high flying Tigers to zero points. But, to me, it was about how bad Mauk played, not how well the Dogs defended. Mauk was absolutely dreadful.

Arkansas had a pretty good showing against Alabama last Saturday. But, it left a lot of us wondering if Arkansas has come that far, or if Bama has gotten that bad. The fact is, Alabama is really struggling and did so against a team that they had outscored 104-0 in the last 2 years. Though the Hogs played tough, they were unable to win the game when it was given to them in the last 4 minutes of the game. I have a tough time giving credit to a team who was unable to make hay when it matters.

Arkansas is playing much better defense, but CANNOT throw the ball on offense, which is where the UGA weakness on defense is. Additionally, UGA proves..once again...that it recruits great backs, but can make running room for anyone. The Hogs are getting close, but will get beaten up inside by the Dogs run game. Mason has the limited ability to make throws in the play action pass.
UGA

Kentucky at LSU
Is Kentucky for real? If there was ever a time for UK to knock off an SEC West team, this could possibly be it. UK has recruited some play makers on the perimeter. But, do they have the overall depth? Let's be real, aside from the Refs failure in the swamp, Kentucky should be unbeaten. Towles has looked incredible in the first half of the season, having thrown for 1500 yards. But, the running game has really struggled, having 500 yards total between the top rushers. On the other side of the ball, Kentucky has given up points.

LSU is putting a lot of weight on the shoulders of it's very young stars. After getting curb stomped by Auburn, they went into the Swamp and won. Sure, Florida isn't any good. But, it was still a tough road win. What better way to get put on the map than a home win against a good team?
LSU

Florida at Missouri
Battle for the bottom! Aside from Vandy, these two teams are possibly the worst teams in the SEC. Florida has been in a lot of very close games, winning one against UK and losing one against LSU. At least they are scoring SOME points. Missouri, on the other hand, was BLANKED at home against UGA.

I put faith in the Florida defense. They cause turnovers in handfuls.
Florida

SEC Game of the Week
Texas A&M at Alabama

A week ago, I would have taken Alabama at home by a wide margin. Well, not really. I don't respect this current Bama team and I said so months ago when I predicted 3 losses. But, I respect TAMU even less. They are 2 1st Quarter turnovers away from a trainwreck each and every week. It's the nature of the offense they run and the lack of defense they field. They may be able to move it between the 20s against Bama, but they will be unable to score on sustained drives. Sure, they may be able to get a long TD or two, but I don't think they can consistently score. On the other hand, Bama's offense is struggling to find identity, having put the first half of the season almost entirely on Cooper's shoulders. The dominate run game just isn't there as it has been in Saban's tenure. This is a good week to get back to that. The TAMU defense will struggle against the constant thumping of the 15 Star backfield.

So, back to what I was saying. I would take Bama by 2 TDs and a field goal. But, that would be stupid because they can't kick field goals.
So, Bama by 14.

And that's what get for believing in Bama and Tennessee. Week 6 was pretty brutal on me, as the Tide dropped a deuce and Tennessee choked. That left me with an overall 10-7 record. I at least called the Auburn thumping of LSU and State beating TAMU. If you want a refresher, go check out Last Weeks Post.

I guess I can say that I expected Bama to win by a very small margin. And, they were about 2 inches short of that. But, that's Bama's MO...right? Nah. I don't believe that and neither should you. They were given a TD on the quasi-fumble turned scoop-and-score. If it hadn't been for that, Ole Miss might have strolled away.

Florida had to dig deep in the well, and it looked for 6 hours like they might have a QB...right up until he was booted from the team later that night.

Mississippi State proved to the world that TAMU is always a turnover from disaster. I said it last week...if you can get them behind a score and get constant pressure on the QB, they will fold. And that's exactly what they did as Kenny Hill tossed 3 INTs at a LINEBACKER. Is State a #3 team? Well, we won't have to wait long.

Auburn thumped LSU, which we thoroughly covered in our LSU Review.

What's on the dockett for Saturday?

Ole Miss at Texas A&M
Well, their fellow state team gave the recipe for beating the Aggies. Get a good pass rush, shut down the sideline throws, and force Hill to throw across the middle. The thing is, Ole Miss has a better pass rush than State and is absolutely sick when the ball is thrown at them. Guess what TAMU will do? Throw the ball. You can't dismiss TAMU completely, as there has to be an inevitable bit of revenge lurking. But, this isn't a rivalry game and I don't expect the emotions to last more than the first quarter. I expect them to last until when Hill puts one on the dirt from a N'Kimdiche sack or he tosses one into the hands of those so called "land sharks."

On the flip side, Good Bo showed up Saturday in Oxford. He has been much better at home than on the road and has flip-flopped pretty consistently from Good Bo to Bad Bo. Can he make it 3 weeks in a row? Against the 12th man? Probably not. The good news is, his little used running back, Walton, is beginning to emerge. What a time to come of age than against the SEC Wests worst defensive unit...especially against the run. Bo won't have to win the game. But he needs to not loose it.
Ole Miss

Florida vs LSU
Wow. Hard to believe that less than 6 years ago, this would have been the REAL National Championship game. Now, it's PLEASE DON'T GET BEAT TOO BAD OR I'M OUT OF A JOB game for wo different coaches. I know that sounds like it's a little sensationalism, but let Les Miles get blown out by a TERRIBLE Florida team and see what happens. I don't think a loss will mean Muschamps job, but if he gets blown out at home....well....

LSU is better than they appeared last week against Auburn. They were completely unprepared for the Tiger offense. They have already punted on this season and have decided to prepare their very talented underclassman for the future. I can't say they blame them. They have been an NFL pipeline for several years. They haven't been able to keep ANYONE on the field before bolting for the greener pastures of the NFL. I expect them to grow tremendously as the year goes on. Les Miles has been unable to produce the last few years and most fans aren't patient enough to take the mounting losses. Especially bad ones.  They may not be able to win the west with Jennings and Hilliard, but they could sure make a game of it. Instead, the elite prospects are straight out of high school and playing.

I simply don't see how Florida can stay in this game. Driskel gets pulled for....whoever that kid was....only to see him win the game, be named the savior,  and then get booted. Maybe that will give him some motivation. Florida has two very good backs that could keep them in the game. But, they won't.
LSU

Georgia at Missouri
Who knows who will show up for this game? The SEC East is a complete and utter mess. Missouri has faced 1 ranked team, and lost. They haven't stopped anyone on defense YET. They are mid pack in defense and offense. That isn't the stats you expect for an SEC East contender. Especially when you consider the competition has been South Dakota State, Toledo, UCF and Indiana. On the other hand, UGA has had a pretty tough road to ride so far. But, they have the best player in the country who can score at any moment via kickoffs, handoffs, or taking passes to the house. You have to think that a Pruitt lead defense will come up with a few stops against Mauk and Co, if not completely shut them down. Fact is, this offense has a few weapons, but is the worst that Missouri has fielded since entering the league. Bud Sasser is a a true threat, but he is probably the only one the Tigers have. UGA has lost a plethora of defensive backs in the last year, so the Mauk/Sasser might be the only thing between a respectable loss and a blowout. And I don't think Missouri can stop Gurley. No one else has.
UGA

SEC Game of the Week
What other game would you choose? How many times will you see an SEC West showdown of unbeaten #2 and #3? Though we covered this game already in the MSU Preview, let's just cover a few things. One coach has 1 significant win under his belt against a good team. One coach has only 2 losses against Top 10 teams. One offense has shown nearly every card it has (and has looked phenomenal against mediocre SEC West defenses). One has shown it's cards for exactly 1 half. Both have pretty dang good defenses.
Auburn

***BONUS PICK***
Just to get my stats up....
Alabama plays the revenge game as well as anyone. Arkansas' strength on offensive plays into Bamas strength on defense. On the flip side, the Hawgs are porous.

So, I improved to 15-3 this week. Not a bad week, all things considered. I even won in my NFL league , which means I have doubled the wins that Yahoo! predicted I would have. Keep laughing, suckas.
Anyway, after Last Weeks Post, a flurry of trading broke out, which shook up my lineup. The good news is, I THINK I have a team that can win it all. But, it came at a cost. I trade Bo Wallace and Evan Engram for Taysom Hill, the BYU QB. I figured I had ridden the Bo Wallace train long enough. I think he will falter down the stretch. Naturally, Hill broke his leg against Utah State. So, that was a bust. The other trade, however, was excellent. I noticed that one of my competitors had a high scoring TE. Like, so many points each and every week that I was forced to do some research. Turns out, Johnson, from Marshall, isn't a TE at all. Oh, he is listed as one...but he is actually their starting RB. And, a good one at that. He averaged 23 points a game. I had to give up a lot for him, but I had already decided that aside from Carden or Abdullah, I would give up whatever to secure him. Naturally, he gave me 37 points in his first week on my team, where he had averaged around 20.
So, who is up this week? A lot of my star power is on byes and I am depleted on RBs because of trades.
QB: Carden lit up SMU for 51 points, his second highest of the season. He is averaging 41 fantasy points a game and has South Florida next. South Florida has been able to stifle other players this year, but Carden is a guy you must start each and every week.
RB1: Abdullah is on a bye after the Huskers worst performance of the year against Michigan State. That wasn't a surprise at all. But, again, you have to start a guy like that. I scooped up Ward on one of the aforementioned trades. He is a RB from Oregon State, who has been splitting carries with Storm Woods, whom I trade away. Ward responded with 22 points for me, but he is ALSO on a bye. Meaning, T Rawls from Central Michigan is up as the RB1. He has NIU to play against. Rawls lit it up for me last week for 39 monster points. He averages a 30 point game in between pedestrian 18 point games. Meaning, he will probably be limited in production.
RB2: I am picking up Wick from Wyoming. After a limited roll against Michigan State two weeks ago and a bye week last week, he was available. I have had him 2 different times this year and he hasn't done much. He is playing Hawaii, which is a very favorable matchup. He hasn't scored more than 19 points a game yet this year, but he is dependable. I am expecting a big game following his bye. Hawaii isn't very good against the run.
WR1: He may not be Hardy, but ECU's Jones has benefited from the prolific passing attack from Carden. He is averaging 16 points a game, but his last two games have gone over 20 as the defenses continue to target Hardy. South Florida doesn't have the playmakers to shut down both Hardy and Jones. I expect them to target the former.
WR2: Mississippi State's Wilson has caught a TD in every single game he has played this year. Though it pains me to play him against my own Tigers, one can't deny that he is Prescott's game breaker. I won't go into it any more than that.
FLEX: Treadwell has been targeted by every team he has faced. He has had one good game, against Memphis. Otherwise, it has been tough sledding. Up next is a TAMU team that struggled with premier pass catchers. It's a boom or bust play. If I can get a solid RB on trade, I will be replacing him.
K: Hunnicut is one of the best kickers out there. He is on a team that scores a lot of points. Additionally, that team is coming off a loss and gets a rival in Texas this Saturday.
DST: Temple is playing a Tulsa team that can score points. But there is no DST out there, other than Houston, that can create takeaways.  I don't expect any points from points allowed, but I do expect a lot of turnovers.
In conclusion, I am not real happy with the matchups I have this week. I have a stable of very good and very consistent players which has allowed me to go out and get some boom or bust players. Of those, only Johnson has been a boom. The rest have been complete busts. The thing is,  in my premier matchup, I am stuck with them leading into a match against a 4-2 team with a lot of very good players. I may have to make some late trades.

Ok, who had Ole Miss and MSU tied at #3? None of you. The good news is, the recent "upsets" have brought fans of both Magnolia State schools out the woodwork. Nah, I'm not judging. I know a few of them, myself. So, even though last Saturday was the biggest Saturday in the history of Mississippi, we are all set up to do it again. That's how the media wagon rolls.
So, Auburn heads to Starkville, and though I regret selling my tickets, I couldn't go anyway since I am stuck in Utah. Heck, I might not get to see the game. The Bulldogs are off the best two week stretch of their history, so it would seem. They beat LSU at LSU and then rolled up Texas A&M at home . Surprising? No. At least to me, since I called both of those wins (my 3 avid readers will point out that TECHNICALLY, that isn't right). Prescott has exploded onto the Heisman scene, though he was another fairly known quantity, at least to fantasy players. He runs. He throws. He does them both really well. And, he has some good pieces around him.
Meanwhile, Auburn took a back seat ride to all the "upsets" last week, joining FSU as the only Top 5 Teams to win, and each did so convincingly. Except, one team actually played someone and rolled them up in the first quarter. The other team didn't start scoring points until half time. But, that's none of my business. I know I expect people around the nation to praise the Tigers on what they did to LSU, but it has been a pretty quiet week on that front. As impressive as the wins for Ole Miss and Mississippi State were, the destruction of LSU was just as compelling, yet it's been a side note. That's ok. These Tigers are at their best when they are left alone, stalking in the bushes.
Let's break down the matchups
MSU Offense vs Auburn Defense
The Bulldog offense hasn't struggled to move the ball. Prescott already has over 1200 passing yards and almost 500 rushing yards. He has a little better than 70% completion ratio. To go along with his ability, he has some pretty good weapons surrounding him, specifically Wilson and Lewis.. You may recall my faith in Wilson, as he has prototypical size and speed, since I traded up to get him on my fantasy team. Wilson has a big game against TAMU while Lewis was held out of action. He is expected to return. Additionally, Robinson has been a good back to complement Prescott. Auburn's defense seems to have turned the corner with an absolutely lights out performance against LSU, and while I would love to label them as elite, I recognize that the LSU offense that they faced Saturday night was simply dreadful. They had zero shot with a freshman QB. But, regardless of who they played, they were still an SEC offense that were held to ZERO 3rd down conversions. Aside from one busted pass play in the 1st Quarter, there would be zero highlights for the LSU offense. The Auburn secondary is marginally better than it has been, but it has gotten a good bit deeper with the addition of some veteran play from Trovon Reed and an influx of heavy hitting young guys like Nick Ruffin. The Auburn front 4 hasn't had the number of sacks that any of us expected, me included. I expected this group to be the 4 Horseman of the Sackocalypse, if you recall. Instead, they have been a run stuffing, hole plugging front 4 who rely on blitzes off the edge or from their linebackers. The thing is, the blitzes have almost ALWAYS worked because the opposing linemen are having their hands full with the likes of Wright and Adams. Sure, it isn't glamorous to take up all those blocks, but the hits that are being levied by the blitzers have been devastating. The matchup that will win this game, which I alluded to in my last post, is going to be the Kris Frost vs Dak Prescott matchup. Frost has been limited in his first few years at Auburn, both by injury and the ability to pick up Johnson's schemes. But, by the end of last year, he and McKinnzy had turned into a very dynamic linebacker core. Frost has the makings of an elite player because of his rare combination of speed and size. We have seen it several times late last year and this year where he can run down skill players, even from behind. I fully expect Frost to act as a QB spy, ready to meet Prescott if he comes up the middle, which is where he is deadly. Prescott has been compared to Cam, and that comparison is certainly valid when considering his running style. He is deadly if he gets up the middle, untouched. If he gets to the second level, his long strides are tough to match. Conversely, if he can get chipped at the line or smacked up the middle before he builds speed, his running can be held in check, forcing him to have to throw to win. While he has the look of a very good passer, his skill players such as Wilson and Lewis, haven't been matched up with a defense who has more than 1 or 2 good cover players. Auburn has several very cover corners and safeties with fantastic range. The issue in Auburn's secondary has been the focus on INTs rather than defending the pass. We saw it against Kansas State, and though they did pick one off in the endzone, the same play style led to another TD. Additionally, the aforementioned play against LSU where Reed went for the ball and missed, setting up a first and goal for LSU's only score. Again, I have struggled to label Auburn as an elite defense, simply because of the past. It is already self evident that this group is far superior to anything fielded since 2007. Though last year's group was great inside the redzone, it struggled every where else. In 2014, the defense has been phenomenal, considering the two great running teams that they have stuffed in Kansas State and Arkansas. But, they have not played a team that is as deadly throwing and running. Shutting down the Bulldogs will prove if they are ready. I think they are. Kris Frost will prove his worth as Prescott's spy.
Advantage-Auburn
Auburn's Offense vs MSU's Defense
The Bulldog defense has been shakey at times, allowing 34, 29, and 31 points to UAB(a much improved squad, I admit) , LSU, and TAMU teams. The LSU game, in particular, was a bit misleading, however.  MSU did their best to let the Tigers back in the game with terrible gameplay late in the 4th. As stated in other places, TAMU can score points, but it only takes a takeaway or two to beat the Aggies. Once they are down, they start forcing the ball, which led to 3 INTs against MSU. Though TAMU has set the world on fire up until last week, I wasn't very impressed with them. South Carolina is absolutely dreadful, and that was the only quality win TAMU had. Don't get me wrong, I believed SCAR would be the team in the east. But time has shown them to be....well...whatever it is they are. With LSU as our only reference point, I am forced to believe MSU won't shutout the Tigers. Despite the already lopsided score against LSU, Auburn could very easily have scored 50 points or better. On the flip side, I do have to note that the Bulldogs brought a lot of pressure against Kenny Hill, forcing him to make errant throws. In a shocking realization, Auburn's offensive line simply has not been what it was last year, due to Robinson, Prosch leaving for the NFL and injuries to other starters. MSU may be able to provide a lot of pressure up the middle on Marshall. They may even be able to shut down CAP. But, ultimately, the weapons both on the perimeter are too great. Sure, you have to be upright to throw the ball, but Marshall's strength is outside of the pocket, anyway. And where is Corey Grant?
Advantage-Auburn

Special Teams
Admittedly, I haven't watched enough MSU football to know how they are in special teams. What I do know is that Auburn has, statistically, one of the best punt returners in the game and a field goal kicker/punter/kickoff man in Carlson who can bury you from anywhere on your side of the 50.
Advantage Auburn

Gamebreakers

Kris Frost
This is the type of game he was recruited for. He has all the skills and is really becoming a finished player. Prescott is so dangerous because he dictates the play based upon what defenses give him. The kryptonite to this type of player is an equally versatile player. Frost has the look.

Lewis/Wilson
Matching up to one dominate receiver can be done by most teams. Matching up to 2 dominate receivers is a daunting task outside of the elite defenses. Auburn hasn't been great in the secondary in 10 years. They have looked decent thus far, but have been hot and cold when the ball is in the air. With Auburn's inability thus far to create a pass rush, Prescott will be able to fire down the field. If Auburn brings the blitz, it will force a lot of man-on-man matchups on the edge. Wilson is a scary matchup to anyone, especially a Tiger's secondary who doesn't have any really tall or physical corners. In a game like this, you can't be 50% on throws down the field. If MSU connects on even 25% of 50/50 balls, Auburn could be in trouble.

Quan Bray
He has been very good against lower competition. Against LSU, he did an admirable job. But, Bray's MO in years past has been his skittishness with the ball in the air. In a game against premier opponents, field position is everything. Too many times in the past, he has allowed balls to drop inside the 20. You cannot allow a special teams unit to dictate your starting position. He has to be smart on when to field balls. More importantly, he has to get big returns when given the chance. Auburn doesn't need to be forced in to 10 play drives. They need to have a short field.

I know this is a 2 versus 3 matchup, which is exceedingly rare in college football. But, MSU has benefited mightily from the struggles of other teams, specifically those within their own conference. Bama is down. LSU is down. Arkansas is still down. MSU's out of division foe, SCAR, may be the 2nd worst team in the East, right above Vandy. Both of these teams are very good. But, only one has the fit and finish, the weapons on offense, the depth on defense, to really take it to the next level. The deciding factor will be, will Frost meet Prescott up the middle and will the Auburn offensive line gel? State is a good team who has shown exactly how good they are. Auburn is a great team that hasn't showed it. I said late last week that Marshall hasn't been set loose yet. For a half last week, he was. It showed.

Greetings from Utah! Yep. Back at work here in Ogden. The long and short of it? This was the first game that I can remember that I was away from my wife. Truth be told, the LSU tickets were the first tickets that we sold. I sold them off a Facebook group within minutes of having them delivered. Of course we find out that Justin, who runs our WORLD FAMOUS (not really, but it is awesome) tailgate spot, had circled this game as one of the big games of the year. Meaning: low country boil, live music by River Dan and the River Dan Band, and of course, being on the steps at the Tiger Walk. Even though I had zero chance of getting out of this work (and to be honest, it was hard to turn down the opportunity to earn this much overtime), I wanted her to go...desperately. After all, you don't have to go to the game to have a great time, as we found out at the Iron Bowl last year.

Miraculously, she scored 2 free tickets from 97.7 The Zone. She dumped the boys off and took Aubree to see her first LSU game. Alyse has been great luck to Auburn while playing LSU, having seen the 2004 and 2010 games. So, I sat in a hotel room while she and Aubree enjoyed the festivities. But, Aubree kept my streak going by getting some Aubie love!  Check them out! Can you name the players?

Alright, on to the game! So, how did we do? Well, that part is evident. The real Tigers curb stomped LSU in the 1st half. But, was it as I had expected in my LSU Preview?

Auburn's Defense vs LSU's Offense
The LSU offense vs Auburn defense went exactly as we thought it would. So much so that I won't even discuss the second half. I expected to see a fumble by either the freshman QB or RB. That happened on the first series of the game, reminiscent to 2013, though Auburn didn't recover . What did happened was 3 straight 3-and-outs to start the game followed by a garbage play from Trovon Reed, who went for a pick instead of knocking the ball down against Dupre to set up LSU's 1 and only score. Harris had zero shot in this game after the first series and it showed with an abysmal completion ratio. Up front, Auburn was once against dominate against the run and still provided a few sacks mixed in. Johnson brought the blitz from every position, just like we knew he would, and it destroyed any rhythm LSU might have tried to establish. All told, Auburn forced 7 3-and-outs and hold LSU without a single 3rd Down conversion. 280 total yards of offense allowed. That's not bad. But, although the Tigers were dominate, I caution everyone to buy in to Auburn as an elite defense. Les Miles hit the panic button after MSU. The success rate of freshman QBs in the SEC is almost nonexistent. And while it may be good to shake up a win or two, it is a self destruct button for the player. What I will say is this: Auburn isn't great at any 1 position....yet. But there isn't a weakness on the field that I feel is a liability. When the ball goes in the air, I no longer dread what is about to happen. Though Reed gave up a garbage play, his cover skills in the last few weeks have improved dramatically to where I wouldn't throw at him. And he is the LEAST experienced of the bunch! That is, other than Ruffin, who was booted for a targeting hit. And, I still think that was a mercy ruling from the officials.  Up front, we don't have that dominating player, but that's ok, too. It takes away a focal point for the opposing offense. So, again, let's not drink the coolaid QUITE yet. We have 1 more big test for our defense coming this weekend. If they pass it, (and you will have to read my next post to see), then I will deem them worthy of the Auburn defenses of old. And, it comes down to 1 guy. Talk about pressure!

Auburn's Offense vs LSU's Defense
Auburn scored on its first 4 series including 3 TDs. They scored on 5 of 7 first half series. They ran. They threw. They were versatile. And, we saw just what these receivers were capable of doing. Marshall and Johnson hit 9 different receivers. The Coates catch was amazing, but perhaps the most astounding catch of the day wasn't a TD at all. Instead, it was a chain moving, diving catch by Duke. The ball looked impossibly out of reach, but he showed why wingspans matter. He must have covered 10 yards with the combination of his dive and his wingspan. The other telling stat? CAP had 3 catches for 35 yards in addition to another 100 yard day, showing his true versatility. You may recall that I wrote way back (even to last year) that he was deadly catching the ball. In fact, in A-Day 2013, he led in receiving yards! I expected him to be a big pass catcher in 2013, but by the LSU game, Auburn's identity had been forged behind Mason and there wasn't a need for him. But, that will change this year. If you can scare defenses with Coates and Williams (and there isn't a defense out there that isn't scared), you can break a game wide open early by throwing wheel routes to CAP. This offense will score as many points as Gus wants it to score. Sure, the Kansas State game aside....

Auburn shut it down in the 2nd half, and while I despise taking the boot off an opponents throat, this was one opponent that wasn't getting up after getting punched in the mouth. But, we saw what happened back in January when you let a quality opponent get up from being knocked down. The thing is, this victory was tied for the largest margin of victory for Auburn against LSU. So, it's hard to really nit pick at points. If I were Gus, and I'm not, I wouldn't give Bama the same treatment come November. And, mark my words, that will become reality.

You may recall that I posed a question to Coach back at the Tiger Trek 2014 about the reality of setting Auburn offensive records, across the board. A few games into the season and it sure looks like it could be a reality.

I had training all week, so no post was made about the top SEC games in Week 5. I know, you are all just heartbroken.

Anyway, so let's review week 4, now just a distant memory. But, if you care, you can read what I wrote here.
Auburn won, but didn't cover the spread.

Bama crushed Florida and somehow Muschamp didn't get the Kiffin Treatment.

Mississippi State went into Death Valley and beat the Tigers, despite trying to give the game away in the last few minutes.

How did I fair? Well, TECHNICALLY I was 2-1. BBUUUTTT....I want to point out that I had full faith in the Bulldogs and that the ONLY reason I took LSU was because it was in Death Valley at night. Everything told me that State would win, except location. It was simply playing the odds. So, though I lost this one, I do point out that I kinda sorta knew they would win. So, I could say I an 8-5 since I TECHNICALLY picked LSU to win. But 9-4 sounds so much better. Yes, it does make me sleep better at night.

So...the big week is here. Tons of big games. Let's get to it.

Florida vs Tennessee
Florida sucks. Tennessee also sucks, but less. Heck, the entire East is a grab back of mediocrity.  I know playing the SEC West in Atlanta is a daunting task, but SOMEONE has to do it. The crazy thing is, when Worley was named the starter, I told everyone I knew that Jones had officially flushed the 2014 season. I didn't think Worley would start for any team in the Power 5 conferences. The young Vols team struggled with Oklahoma. Then they go out and play a tough Georgia team last week. You can imagine my surprise when Worley did his best Manning impression, sitting in the pocket and hitting receivers. He got knocked around, but he got back up and led one of the best late 4th drives I have seen so far this year. Ultimately, they came up short, but they played a heck of a game.  He could be the most improved QB I have watched this year. Additionally, I told yall Marquez North was the real deal. Believe me now? On the flip side, Florida looked absolutely lost against a team with a decent QB and a fantastic WR. Sound familiar?

On the other side, the Vols have a fantastic middle line backer and a decent defense. The Gators couldn't throw out of a wet paper sack, but they do have two intriguing backs. Taylor looked to bust out from where he left off in 2013, only to see his carries diminish to Jones, who is a bigger and more physical back. They both average 5.3 yards per carry and each has 2 TDs. The only chance Florida has is if you can stack Jones and Taylor together to form a Orange and White version of Todd Gurley. Fat chance. But, the run does allow Florida to stay in the game, just don't expect any 200 yard performances.

The Vols get Florida in Knoxville, which always helps your odds.

Florida has to win this game. I mean, it's imperative that they at least split the games between Tennessee and Georgia. Considering how well Tennessee has improved (and how the Gators have managed to get WORSE), I'd say the chances of beating the Vols is slim and Georgia is even slimmer. I never thought I would pick the Vols in a game in 2014. Times. They are a'changin'.

Alabama vs Ole Miss
No, it isn't my SEC game of the week even if Game Day is going to The Grove. America has Roll Tide Fatigue, and it shows each and every year when a game like this comes around. The media picks and SEC West team (that isn't LSU or Auburn) and props them up as a potential spoiler to the Tide's season. When Petrino was at Arkansas, it was that game. And it was never a game. Now it is Freeze at Ole Miss. Truth be told, Ole Miss finally has a good enough team to play 4 quarter football. With Ole Miss, you get Good Bo or Bad Bo. In fantasy land, he has alternated from 37 points to 15. This THEORETICALLY should be Good Bo week after a bad outing against Memphis. But, he has played his worst games against Bama. Now, he hasn't run his mouth like last year and has somewhat refrained from providing bulletin board material to the Tide.  It's too bad that the Crimson Tide doesn't really need it, anyway. Sure, it's at the Grove. Sure, it's going to be Simm's first road game.

Let's of story lines here that people want to hang their hat. But, the important aspects are usually overlooked.

Ole Miss has a very good defense. They rank 3rd in the country in points allowed at 8.5. Granted, that has been against some cup cake teams. I don't think they can stop Bama completely, but I do think they can slow them down. The key? Don't let Amari Cooper streak down the field as Florida allowed. Ole Miss has a front 4 good enough to fight the talented stable of backs from Alabama. Simms will have to throw the ball around to other players. Look for OJ Howard and Christion Jones to produce. Don't forget about DeAndrew White coming back from injury. Ole Miss has recruited as well as anyone in the country.,..for 2 years. And while that has turned into some immediate success, it won't be until next year that we truly see if these prospects are gold.

On the flip side, Alabama played well against their cupcake walks (including an abysmal Florida team). But, Trickett and the WVU crew gave Bama fits and proved that the Tide secondary still hasn't improved from previous years. Bo Wallace, despite his 6 INTs, has thrown 11 TDs for over 1271 yards with a 71% completion ratio. He has 5 different receivers with 10 catches or more. Treadwell is a future NFL talent that will demand the Tide's best cover corner and shading from the safety. Cody Core has done well to shine in Treadwell's former place as the secondary receiver. With the coverage matchups these two demand, it could come down to the very dynamic Evan Engram, possibly the best receiving TE in the country, to make or break this offense. The sophomore hasn't found the endzone yet in 2014, though he has over 175 yards receiving. The biggest question mark for me is, will Bo run? He hasn't been the running threat he was in previous years due to his progression as a passer. He has yet to break more than a 10 yard run or into the endzone. Though you might suspect him to be holding back due to his laundry list of injuries he has sported in the past, it is equally as easy to suspect that he has been holding back on purpose. While many people point out the Tide's inability to contain a dual threat QB, I point out that the QBs that have given the Tide fits have always had good...if not GREAT running backs. If they Tide can rush straight up field, it will both negate the ability for Wallace to run and turn into sacks. Here is what we do know: Wallace coughs the ball up when the game is on the line.

This is another great outing for Ole Miss, who I suspect will have a terrific year. But, costly turnovers late in the game seal the deal for the Tide.
Tide. Close. REAL CLOSE.

Mississippi State vs Texas A&M
This is a true flip 'em and pick 'em game. We THINK we know who TAMU is. They beat a solid Arkansas club in a neutral site game in over time. They crushed the Gamecocks, a team who even I thought was the best in the East. But, because the Hogs are the Hogs and the Cocks are the Cocks, we really don't know much about Kenny Trill and Co. It helps if we compare this team to the previous two TAMU clubs. While they were dangerous and beat some good teams, the fact is that they didn't win a lot of games, when all was said and done. Kenny Hill is a better passer than Manziel. But no one improvises like Johnny. And no one on the TAMU team is Mike Evans. They may be better across the board, but they don't have the game breakers that TAMU had the previous two years.

For TAMU, I still haven't seen much in terms of defense. Arkansas was able to run for 285 and pass for 200. They essentially gave up two 100 yard rushers in a single game. Arkansas has a gun shy QB and not much in the way of receivers. On the flip side, De'Runnya Wilson and Jameon Lewis are big time receivers for State. Though they have decent backs, specifically Robinson who has almost 500 yards already, Prescott is all they need to move the chains.

Conversely, TAMU relied heavily on the pass with Carson picking up 55 yards which included a 24 yard run. State's defense improved mightily against LSU when they had given up 34 points to UAB. But, I believe that game was an aberration and UAB is a much improved squad (they knocked off Troy and Alabama A&M). The problem with TAMU in games of importance has been the 14 point swings that follow giving up a TD and backing it up with a turnover or 3 and out. When everything clicks, they can put up points in a hurry and put games out of reach. But, against balanced teams who can control the clock, they have a pretty bad record. Mississippi State hasn't arrived quite yet. After this weekend, they will have their train parked firmly in the station before being derailed by Auburn and Alabama.

SEC Game of the Week
Homer pick? Yes. But, the two games against Auburn and Alabama have shaped the SEC West for 20 years. I have covered this in my LSU Preview, so if you want more details, go read it.

Ultimately, LSU isn't the same team they have been. Auburn hasn't been great so far in 2014. Though Auburn lost in 2013, it was this game that shaped the entire season. No, I don't think it will take an Auburn loss to get to Atlanta like last year. But, this will be an identity shaping game.

Follow my Fish of 2014

In case you don't follow me on Facebook (which you should), I will be out of town for the next two weeks...shoved up inside a rocket motor for 12 hours a day. So, I decided to get out and do some fishing. Jon and I made plans back on Saturday or so. You know, when we were supposed to have gobs of rain. With the rainfall and a small cold front, I figured that the water on Pickwick would be up a little (they are draining it down due to some TVA problems), the current would kick up, and the water temp would be about pppuurrrrffeecct for the fish to get active.

But, the weathermen strike again! No rain. None. But, we had already made our plans. Considering how much of an ordeal it is to fish the lower end of Pickwick, we didn't want to change our plans so late in the game. Now, if you recall, we fished Pickwick a bunch during the Government Shutdown last year and had an absolute riot in Waterloo. The largemouth were stacked in grasslines and we caught both numbers and size! Click here to read the report and watch the vid!

Well, we didn't get started fishing until around 830 due to road construction on the Natchez Trace Parkway. We get on the water and check the the TVA app. No current. None. Ugh. We might not be REAL smart, but we have figured out that low water levels, no current, and high skies make for a long day.

But, within the first 5 minutes of fishing grass lines around the main channel, I had 5 blow ups on my Sammy. Unfortunately, none of them stuck. I never once felt on on the line. The fish were fairly active for the first 30 minutes or so and we watched them running shad up and down the grassline, sometimes tossing them 3 feet in the air. Because the shad were around 2 inches long and the Sammy is about double that, I downsized the bait to a smaller Zara Spook. No takers. At least the view was cool. That is the old Colbert Ferry from before the TVA flooded it.

After hammering the grass line that we have slayed the fish on in the past, we moved upriver to the Natchez bridge only to find zero active fish.

At this point, it was getting hot. I mean, hot. And the Big Easy is an aluminum oven. Since we had to be on the road pretty early, we stopped at a place that we had caught smallies in the past. In fact, on this spot I caught 3 different species of black bass. You can read about it here.

Anyway, having abandoned my power fishing gear, I went to the old stand bye, the PowerTeam Lures Sick Stick on a PTL pea head. Here is a link to the cheapest place to buy them...good ole Amazon.

Anyways, there is one particular overhanding tree that I have caught multiple fish every time I have fished it. Unfortunately, with the lowered water level, only bits and pieces are still submereged. But, enough of it was still under water that I was able to hop the ole stick bait around and get a taker. When he latched on it, I about snatched him into my own face. Poor guy.
We noticed that there was current on this spot, which caused us to rocket down stream. It was odd, because there wasn't any current elsewhere. After some inspection, we figured out that the bend in the river, just up stream, caused what little flow there was to build against this bluff. That seemed to be the ticket as Jon pulled in a nice smallie on a crankbait pretty quick.

But, the stretch with current was only about 50 yards long and we soon found ourselves in stagnant water. We motored back up stream and repeated the process, which lead to more a few more bites plus another nice smallie.
After we completed the drift, we were both extremely hot and time was running out on us, as I had a 6pm softball game and about 3 hours of travel time in between. We headed in, only after we tweaked his Humminbird 997 unit. Amazingly, as we were preparing to put the boat on the trailer, we graphed some of the prettiest looking areas. We found a rocky point in 18 feet that featured a nice bait ball and a lot of solid arches stacked together. I have never seen a prettier looking smallie setup. I can't wait to fish it next time....whenever that may be.
